Introduction

Extended Reality (XR) is transforming the ways in which cultural heritage is preserved and exhibited in immersive and interactive digital media. New technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality have made it possible to create immersive digital worlds where cultural heritage can be captured, recreated, and exhibited as well as engaging visitors in an interactive manner.The use of Extended Reality in Cultural Heritage will help adopt a creative way of conserving cultural heritage both in tangible and intangible forms by facilitating interactive learning and realistic visualisation. Nevertheless, there are some issues related to authentication, interoperability, accessibility of users, and sustainability of digital heritage. Current literature reveals that there is a requirement for integrated frameworks encompassing immersive technologies and interactive digital conservation approaches.

Background Context:

Recently, progress made on Extended Reality (XR), including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), has brought transformation in the process of documenting, interpreting and experiencing heritage resources. The use of immersive experiences helps tourists to experience heritage resources and objects using visualizations and narratives that are generated using immersive technologies. Therefore, the use of Interactive Digital Preservation is an essential method for preserving tangible and intangible heritage. Nevertheless, regardless of the advancement in technology, many scholars continue to encounter issues associated with authenticity, ethics, accessibility, sustainability and technological interoperability. According to Wang et al. (2025), most of the immersive heritage experiences currently in existence pay more attention to technological use while overlooking cultural significance and preservation, among others. Thus, there is a need for an integrated XR framework in Cultural Studies.

PhD-Level Verification:

Current literature looks at immersive technology, user engagement, and preservation methods in isolation. But few researchers consider immersive experience design, heritage authenticity, ethics in governance, and sustainability of Heritage Preservation within the same extended reality (XR) paradigm. Moreover, empirical testing of human-centric XR models in various heritage settings is underdeveloped, thus providing an excellent topic for doctoral studies.

    Background Context:

    One of the challenges involved in the conservation of intangible cultural heritage is the fact that traditions, rituals, performances and oral stories are dynamic in nature due to the ever-changing social and cultural context. Traditional methods of documentation cannot record these evolving attributes. Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality can provide an environment in which the user gets immersed and engages with the culture using intelligent interaction, contextual reasoning, and adaptive experience. The use of such innovations has made Digital Preservation much stronger because the users are able to interact directly with the culture rather than just looking at the records kept in archives. However, according to Zhang et al. (2025), the current AI systems for preservation of intangible cultural heritage rarely integrate intelligent reasoning, immersive interaction, community engagement, and adaptive learning into one framework for preservation.
