SAMPLE SIZE CALCULATION FOR IMPACT OF TRANSFORMATIONAL

SAMPLE SIZE CALCULATION FOR IMPACT OF TRANSFORMATIONAL AND TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP STYLES ON SELF-EFFICACY WHEN MEDIATED BY ORGANISATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR AMONG HIGHER EDUCATION FACULTY

Subject Area: Education / Adult Learning / Instructional Design

Modified: 28 July 2025

Research conducted within an organization regarding leadership styles has been a focus of inquiry for some time; specifically in relation to their affect on self-efficacy in employees. This research study is an exploration of how transformational and transactional leadership influences self-efficacy of higher education faculty, with organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) as a mediator. For the results of this study to be statistically viable and generalizable to the larger scope, an adequate sample size must be determined. This step ensures the results are accurate and provide a meaningful contribution to the academic relationship between leadership, self-efficacy and OCB.

Sample size calculation

Sample Size: Infinite Population (for populations greater than 50,000)

SS= Sample Size
Z=Z-value (1.96 for a 95% confidence level)
P=Percentage of population picking a choice
C=Confidence interval (Margin error=0.05)

SS=368.79=369

Sample Size – Finite Population (for populations fewer than 50,000)

New SS=

When Pop=Population =32579

Note: Calculate sample size using the infinite population formula. You can then use the sample size obtained from the infinite population calculation to determine the sample size for a finite population.

Conclusion:

The sampling calculation indicates that the professional practice study on the impact of transformational and transactional leadership style on self-efficacy and mediated by organizational citizenship behaviour required a sample size of:
• 369 responses for an infinite population (over 50,000)
• 365 responses for a finite population (i.e., 32,579 faculty members)
These sample size calculations will allow the study to have adequate statistical power to examine the proposed relationships, and glean valid and reliable evidence on leadership styles, self-efficacy and organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among higher education faculty. The sample size is sufficiently large to ensure precision and confidence in the findings of this study.
