Introduction
Children and young people take the center stage in current research because their well- being is critical for the future of societies and nations. It encompasses various areas of inquiry, including education, health, psychology, digital media, social policy, and child protection, and is grounded in multiple disciplines, including sociology, psychology, and health sciences. Children and young people today are growing up and living within a changing world which features globalization, rapid innovation due to technology, climate change, and fast moving family and social structures. Alongside opportunities for empowerment and growth, they are experiencing contemporary stresses, including educational inequity, mental health challenges, child poverty, and risks associated with digital safety and safeguarding. Current dissertation research on child and youth well-being exemplifies rigor in supporting scholars to generate knowledge, in addition to proposing solutions to improve the lives of children and young people everywhere.
Background Context
Child and youth studies brings together theoretical knowledge and experiential knowledge through the medium of how conditions, opportunities, and threats are associated with child and youth development. The early experiences children are exposed to are closely linked to long-term outcomes for education, health, and social mobility, while various cultural and social contexts can either enhance or deter identity and participation. Research in this field promotes children’s rights, safeguarding and accessible opportunities reflecting global considerations such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In the 21st century, areas of investigation such as social media use, youth mental health, educational inequality and child safeguarding have emerged as important areas of interests for researchers and policymakers. Accessing education and seeking social justice in this way can then lead to professional opportunities to generate knowledge that can influence policy, practices and further support for holistic development for children and young people.
