1. The Impact of Electoral Systems on Democratic Representation: A Comparative Study of Proportional and Majoritarian Models

Focus: This thesis will look at the effects of electoral systems on democratic representations by way of comparative analysis of the character, and definition of democratic representation in European, African, and Asian democratic representation in proportional and majoritarian democracies.

2. Populism in the 21st Century: Causes and Consequences

Focus: This study will closely examine the causes and consequences of the worldwide rise of populisms; probing the impact it may have on democratic governance, political institutions, and citizen participation.

3. Overheated Politics and Social Media: The New Landscape of Public Discourse

Focus: This study will investigate the connivance of social media integrative platforms with political polarization, specifically the role of the platforms, algorithms, disinformation and echo chambers on users’ political attitudes and voting behaviours.

4. The Politics of Climate Change: Policy making in the Time of Environmental Crisis

Focus: This dissertation will assess the responses of political institutions and political parties to the climate crisis. More specifically, the policy-making practice of dealing with a crisis within the competing pressures of sustainability and ideology.

5. Corruption and Governance: Structural and Institutional Sources of Corruption, and Reform

Focus: This project will investigate the structural and institutional sources of political corruption, and successful anti-corruption strategies in states with different models of governance.

6. The Role of Political Leadership in Crisis Management: Case Studies of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Focus: This dissertation will analyze the role of distinctive styles of political leadership and how it influenced, or was influenced by, public trust, effective policy, cooperation with state and inter-state organizations related to COVID-19 at the nation-state level.

7. Federalism and Regional Autonomy: The Challenge of Balancing Unity and Diversity in a Multinational Federation

Focus: This project will examine how the few federations that do accommodate regional conceptions of autonomy or critique of national imperatives balance the maintenance of the federation, particularly in Spain, India and Canada.

8. Political Campaigning in the Digital Age: New Technologies, New Campaigning Strategies and Ethical Implications and Impacts

Focus: This research will assess if political campaigns and politicians have truly adapted new technologies and digital marketing strategies with the analytical data of the links formed by voters. The nature of the new anti-voter mobilization techniques and consequent electoral results, which may build upon these technologies, will also be studied including the ethical implications.

9. Human Rights and Political Legitimacy: The Effect of International Norms in Domestic Politics

Focus: This dissertation assesses how adherence to or violations of human rights norms affect political legitimacy, especially in authoritarian states and transitional regimes.

10. The Political Economy of Global Inequality: Institutions, Trade and Development

Focus: This research examines how political and economic institutions create global inequality. It investigates whether enhanced understanding of the relations among the mechanisms associated with trade agreements, development assistance (official development aid) and the associated political consequences and diversified forms of financial governance.
