The ChemBioStruct26 Call for Papers invites researchers to contribute their work related to the structure and chemistry involved in biological function, with particular emphasis on molecular recognition, biomolecular mechanisms and structure-based drug discovery based on structure. This Special Issue will cover a variety of scientific fields such as structural biology, chemical biology, biophysics, computer science, and medicinal chemistry.
This Special Issue provides an opportunity to present research at the interface of structural biology and chemical biology, with applications in molecular recognition, biomolecular mechanisms, structure–function relationships and therapeutic innovation. New developments in cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and integrative structural biology approaches have enabled researchers to study complex macromolecular assemblies in structural contexts (Garman, 2014; Göbl et al., 2014; Banari et al., 2025). At the same time, advancements in machine learning techniques, such as AlphaFold, have increased the prospects for Protein structure prediction, as well as structure-activity relationships and molecular mechanisms (Jumper et al., 2021).
But structure prediction by computation does not negate the need for experimental structure biology. Experiments are still required to validate structures, study the dynamics of proteins, characterise their heterogeneity, and understand molecular interactions that include proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, metabolites, and small molecules.
The Special Issue, resulting from the conference of the Biological Macromolecules Section of the Italian Crystallographic Society and of the Division of Biological Systems Chemistry of the Italian Chemical Society, is meant to gather people from chemistry, biology, structural science, and drug discovery.
