Introduction

The field of English language study in both its functions as a communicative medium and cultural artifact has seen tremendous change due to the shifts in society, technology, and education. This dissertation will investigate theorising and research about the study of language in its multiple forms, and the dimensions of language and identity. Some areas of focus include language learning, sociolinguistics, language and media, and how language both reflects the socio-political and cultural narrative and shapes it. This project will also follow a variety of historical and contemporary responses to the English language study and provide a critical engagement with their implications and use in contemporary society.

English Language Dissertation Titles

1. The History of the English Language in Digital Society: Language and Technology

Focus: This thesis is on engaging digital communication (e.g., social media, texting, etc.) and its effects on promoting different forms of English, especially around new types of vocabulary and modes of communicating online.

2. Language, Identity, and Power: An Investigation of Linguistic Politics

Focus: The investigation is on how language is being used to signify and help constitute relations of power in society; how we make linguistic choices that either enforce or challenge relations of power to do linguistic labor in political discourse, media accounts, and our everyday lives.

3. Gender and Language: A Critical Investigation of Language in Feminist Discourse

Focus: A critical investigation of language in relation to gender with an emphasis on feminist discourse in modernity landscapes. This investigation will show how language is engaged to reinforce and/or challenge normative gender relations, including the hegemonic.

4. Variation in English: Accent, Dialects and Identity

Focus: This dissertation will study how regional dialects and accents can signify individual and collective social identity, power relations, and cultural affiliation within the English-speaking population.

5. Language and the Media: How English Fosters Public Understanding

Focus: This chapter will cover the creation and use of language in the mass media (news, television, advertising) to help establish a public understanding of social and political issues; develop stories and construct shared understanding.\

6. Language Acquisition: A Comparative Analysis of First and Second Language Acquisition

Focus: This chapter will evaluate the similarities and differences between first language acquisition and second language acquisition. This will be done by thinking about cognitive engagement, language access and cultural perspectives.

7. Language and Globalization: English as a Lingua Franca

Focus: This chapter will look at aspects of how English is playing a role as a global lingua franca, with commentary on the effects of the global spread of English on non-native speakers and its development as a global language.

8. Stylistic Analysis of Literary Texts: Language Use in a Modern Literary Context

Focus: Looking at the authors’ use of language in contemporary literary texts, including the role of their choices in syntax, diction, rhetorical and figurative devices in the construction of narrative, and effects on readers’ engagement with texts.

9. Language and Emotion: The English Language's Role in the Orientation of Psychological States

Focus: This dissertation analyzes the relationship of language and emotion by focusing on the English language’s role in representing psychological states orally and in writing.

10. The Role of English in Multilingual Contexts: A Sociolinguistic Study

Focus: This study will be concerned specifically with English in multilingual contexts; specifically with language policy issues, bilingualism, and the consequences of the presence of English on the local language or other cultural practices.
