Dissertation Topic 1:

Exploring the Intersection of Postmodernism and Feminism in Contemporary Literature

Background Context

Postmodernism and feminism both had tremendous effects on modern literary theory and practice. This research will examine how postmodernism and feminism intersect with the writing and reading of contemporary literature. This study will emphasize how feminist literary theory becomes a challenge to the postmodernism aesthetics and vice versa. It will analyze authors (like Margaret Atwood, Jeanette Winterson, and Angela Carter) and how they complicate and negotiate gender, identity, and power in the postmodern world.

Research Questions

1. How can feminist and postmodernist theories be relational to contemporary literature?
2. In what ways do authors like Atwood and Winterson challenge conventional notions of gender and identity within the parameters of postmodern literature?
3. In what ways can postmodernist techniques such as metafiction and intertextuality interrogate feminist themes in the contemporary novel?

Potential Implications

  • Knowledge of developing feminist literary theory and a postmodern aesthetic.
  • Contributions to studies of gender, power, and identity in contemporary literature.
  • New ways of looking at how authors are employing narrative forms and strategies to resist hegemonic ideologies.
