Introduction

This paper describes Ph.D. dissertation topics related to Design Innovation and Justice in Engineering Design. It will be argued that the research considers the potential for AIGC to be a catalyst for innovation in designing, along with key aspects of innovation: data quality, bias, and ethical frameworks. The research will explore how to promote justice in the design process, while simultaneously recognizing a need for fostering inclusion, fairness, and access. Overall, the aim will be to create opportunities that are more likely to achieve a more just social equity and a responsible design and wising constraints and developing design processes and practices

Design Innovation Dissertation Topics

1. Data Quality and Ethics in AIGC for Design Innovation: Addressing Bias and Privacy

Focus:To consider how to obtain high-quality, unbiased, and diverse datasets for training models in AI-generated content (AIGC) while building actions to improve robustness to foster the knowledge of privacy concerns, ethical standards, and user trust in AIGC-created content.

2. Addressing the Computational Gap for AIGC in Design: Cloud and Distributed Solutions

Focus: This dissertation will focus on exploring and evaluating potential cloud-based, or distributed, systems for computational challenges identified in training AIGC tools while prompted to potentially help lessen some of the infrastructure burden from design teams.

3. Improve AIGC Interpretability for Designers & Clients: Methods and Tools

Focus: The research will investigate incorporating various features, methods, and tools to increase AIGC models’ interpretability (i.e., attention mechanisms or feature visualisations) and interface design to support designers and clients to better understand the AI-generated content.

4. Incorporating AIGC into Design Processes: A Challenge and Its Resolution

Focus: This dissertation will research the frameworks for responsibility and ethical practice with AIGC tools and design related to minimising bias and transparency to optimise the entire design and development process, etc.

5. Ethical Use of AI in AIGC Design: frameworks for ethical use and transparency

Focus: This dissertation will look at frameworks for responsible ethical use of AIGC tools when designing, focusing on minimisation of bias and increasing transparency when generating and developing.

Justice and Engineering Design Dissertation Topics

6. Expanding Justice Training in Engineering Design: Broadening Access and Inclusion

Focus: The aim is to explore and interrogate possibilities for design education to incorporate more work regarding justice training to challenge and disrupt exclusionary power structures, with the goal of making design education and practice more accessible to historically under-represented groups.

7. Justice as a Personal Value: Linking Designer's Orientation to Just Outcomes

Focus: Investigating how an individual designer’ personal values towards justice influence the end design and how personal beliefs based on justice can be captured and translated into collective social aspirations towards equitable and just product design.

8. Measuring Justice in Design Outcomes: Developing Metrics and Frameworks

Focus: Finding and producing the appropriate metrics and frameworks to measure justice in design outcomes. Each metric may only tell part of the justice story; therefore, this work would explore the various “good” outcomes defined through several justice paradigms.

9. Designing Justice-Specific Methods: Developing New Processes for Design Phases

Focus: Building new, justice-specific methods for the proposal phases, generating new ideas in different contexts in the design process-from ideation to the final finished project-and determining at what points there was an impact, if any, on the designers and the outputs that allow to ensure justice is maintained right from the start until the following weeks, months and beyond.

10. Defining Justice in Design: Establishing Consistent Terminology for Future Research

Focus: Defining and creating consistency in terms like “justice” and “design justice” to create a consistent working framework for future research. These would include building definitions and guidelines, with a hope of creating consensus across the design community.
