Introduction

This potential dissertation topics discusses significant issues of Business Intelligence (BI) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and investment taking also into account environmental, social, and governance (ESG). The dissertation topics are looking at data mining methods, comparisons of BI models, and looking at the evolving role for institutional investors with regards to accountability and ESG strategy. Overall, the topics are appropriate for researching the identified research gaps stated previously and support sustainable and data driven decisions in business.

Business Intelligence Topics

1. Methodological Transparency in BI Research: A Reporting Framework for SMEs

Focus: To develop and validate a standard reporting framework to improve the reporting and documentation of data mining methods utilised in BI research. The objective is to improve replicability, allow for comparability among studies, and improve practicability.

2. Beyond Clustering: The Case for Using and Reporting Underutilised Data Mining Techniques in BI Systems for SMEs

Focus: To add to the very small literature base discussing implications and applicability of underutilised data mining techniques (e.g., association rule mining, dimensional modelling, etc.) and techniques not commonly reported in the BI literature (sentiment analysis), for the purposes of helping SMEs improve operational efficiency and strategic decisions, particularly in emerging markets.

3. Cloud and Hybrid BI Models: A Comparative Study of Scalability, Security, and Cost for SMEs

Focus: To study the comparative analysis of the various BI implementation models in relation to their technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, data control, and scalability to provide insight for SMEs who are dealing with limited IT infrastructure and an ever-changing regulatory climate related to data privacy.

4. BI Adoption in SMEs: A Cross-Regional Study of Data Mining Practices in Developed and Developing Economies

Focus: Examining the economic, cultural, and infrastructural influences on the selection, implementation, and success of the data mining techniques in SMEs from different regions of the world. It identifies the issues and policy requirements locally.

5. Business Intelligence and SME Growth: A Longitudinal Study on Innovation and Market Adaptability

Focus: To undertake time series analysis to determine how SMEs capacity to innovate, respond to market changes and adapt their business models and strategy has been impacted through a long-term adoption of BI tools, specifically with SMEs that operate within volatile or highly competitive industries.

ESG and Institutional Investors Topics

6. Investor Activism and ESG Accountability: Influence in High-Risk Sectors

Focus: Investigates the ways in which active institutional investors shape ESG transparency in environmentally and socially sensitive industries, along with how the institutional investor community can promote sector-specific ESG decoupling and ultimately correct the lack of ESG accountability.

7. ESG Engagement Strategies: Passive vs. Active Institutional Investors

Focus: Here we will assess how differences in some engagement (passive ownership vs. active engagement as a shareholder) may influence ESG alignment and the meaningfulness and strategic behaviour of institutional investors around sustainability decision-making.

8. Short-Termism and Greenwashing: The Role of Investment Horizon in ESG Risk

Focus: We detail how short-term institutional investors correlate to ESG decoupling as a consequence of using pressure for more immediate financial returns, therefore supporting the ‘myopic investor’ hypothesis for corporate sustainability agnosticism.

9. Institutional Ownership and ESG Ratings Divergences: A Signal Reliability Analysis

Focus: Assesses the extent to which institutional ownership diminishes differences between ESG ratings and the actual corporate performance and displays an innovative perspective that ESG scores may not be entirely reliable.

10. Dual Mandates of Institutional Investors: Convergence of Financial and ESG Objectives

Focus: Explores how institutional investors take account of the tension between legal fiduciary responsibilities financially and stewardship obligations (ESG), identifications of trade-offs in decision-making and opportunities for accountability transparency in investment governance.
