Environmental science is essential for addressing the complex issues of climate change, biodiversity decline, pollution, and the pursuit of sustainable development. Environmental science can provide ample scientific rationale for creating sustainable futures, including responding to global environmental crisis or considering conservation behaviours. Managing the tensions between considerations for environmental protection versus socio-economic development within the global South, is an ongoing challenge. Global environmental awareness and the need to manage environmental degradation have been emerging reality for decades, and so we face a new urgency to have effective policies and strategies to help manage environmental degradation and promote sustainability.
Environmental science research has never been more important as the global impacts of climate change, deforestation, ocean pollution and loss of biodiversity have become evident. Of particular concern are the compounding impacts and rate of environmental degradation in developing nations facing issues such as lack of resources, poor environmental governance, and limited access to sustainable technologies. While improvements in environmental protection and governance overlap with global sustainability governance efforts, challenges still exist for governance and implementation of environmental policies and solutions. The intention of this dissertation is to address different alternatives or solutions, look at issues of policy, consider the relationships of environmental issues with social equity.
Two issues which concern dryland zones across the world are water supply and water scarcity. Even more, there are extreme water-scarce regions in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, for example. With increasing demand for water, populations in areas of water stress must strive to sustainably navigate areas of freshwater scarcity. This dissertation will examine new water management strategies, particularly rainwater harvesting, desalination and recycling, to assist with fresh water supply in arid regions.
